Week of Nov. 22 – 26, 2021

Good morning everyone!  I wanted to send you ALL a great big “THANK YOU” for the wonderful conferences we had on Thursday evening and Friday morning!  I greatly appreciate all of your support in our students learning and in believing in them as well!  They truly are a pretty amazing group of young people and have so much to offer!  Like all of us, teachers included, we have strengths and areas to work on (Mr. Engel is STILL working on his “spelling” skills and still uses the strategy of STRETCHY SNAKE).  Keep up the GREAT WORK you are doing and please continue to read with them (asking them the 5 Ws for comprehension and in correcting their DETAILED SPELLING SENTENCES by using Adjectives and Adverbs).  With the work we do together, at home and at school, we can work as a TEAM to help our young minds grow and reach for the stars =;)

PLEASE NOTE:

1) LA WRITING – we will be writing about a CELEBRATION that you and your family celebrate together.  We will write about the TRADITIONS (things you do as a family during the celebration) in order to describe the exciting activities you celebrate together.  Please begin discussing this with your child so they are able to write about it at school (HINT:  use our Story Strip for our Walking Stories to help you organize your thoughts and ideas):

2) MAGNET GAME/ACTIVITY – our upcoming Homework #11 will be asking our Grade 2 students to create their own magnet game or activity to share with their classmates.  You will be provided TWO magnets to create this at home and then we can all play with them once they are brought back to school.  You will have 2 weeks to complete this activity but you can begin brainstorming your ideas now.  Each student will get the magnets this upcoming week.  Please do not just print a maze/activity from the internet and use this as your project – I am encouraging you to research some ideas but please create your own project, thank you =;)

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you so much for the great conferences this week!  You are doing a fantastic job and I enjoy working with your children and families as we are a TEAM =;)

Your teacher,

Mr. Engel

Week of Nov. 15 - 19, 2021

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are all staying busy with your RazKids reading and Mathletics programs - these are to help support our learning in both reading and math skills.  Please keep working on these as our reading levels do move up (Literacy Centers work at school) and so should the reading levels/letters in your RazKids reading.  Also, for Mathletics - we should all be working on our Numbers to 100 as the other sections should now be completed.  Thank you to all the families who continue to work on these in order to strengthen our reading and math skills!  You are doing a FANTASTIC job on these and I thank you for your hard work =;)

Please Note - this upcoming week is a short week due to our PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES on Thursday evening and then on Friday morning.  I hope you are able to join us to hear about all the great work your child is doing and to discuss areas to work on.  We all have things to improve on and I thank you for trying your very best in all things you do!  Keep up the great work and always believe in yourselves, Grade 2 students =;)

Below are some exciting activities we are working on.  Please take some time to share these learning activities with your family and show them the wonderful ideas and connections you are making in class:

HW#9 and Keep up the GREAT WORK, Grade 2 students!

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend and continuing to work hard on your school work.  Thank you to ALL the families who look over their Spelling Tests books and do any corrections 3-5 times on that page - this helps the students learn from their mistakes and that making these mistakes are alright as we work to improve on them.  Also, thank you for signing the page so we know you are aware of the amazing work they are doing.  Please make sure these books come back to school on the following day - which is usually the Monday/tomorrow, thank you!

Please Note - our upcoming HW#9 will be over the next TWO weeks due to our short week next week.  The HW#9 will be due on Friday, November 19th which is the same day we will do the spelling test.

Parent Teacher Conferences - these will be online much like last year and they are quickly approaching.  I look forward to speaking to you and your child regarding the amazing learning they are doing as well as any areas to improve on.  I hope you will be able to join us =;)

Stay safe and THANK YOU for your continued support in our learning at SCHOOL and at HOME!  Keep up the great work, everyone! =;)

Week of Oct. 25 - 29, 2021

Good morning everyone and Happy Halloween,

Thank you for a very productive week and in completing some very nice work over the past week.  I have added some pictures so you can share with your family and please have a FUN and SAFE weekend if you do celebrate Halloween.  We have continued with our work on numbers and Place Value (all numbers have a place that they belong to - Ones, Tens, Hundreds).   We have also created some fun activities and games to play in order to build different numbers and even create them in our Math Journals.  Also, we are working very hard in our Social Studies and in figuring out where our 3 communities are located.  Once we discovered where they were located, we then figured out that the land can tell us some very important facts about the community - like their NATURAL RESOURCES, ACTIVITIES, GOODS MADE, etc.  These are helping the students make deeper connections like Text to Self, Text to Text, and Text to World relationships.  In LA, we are finding more Juicy Words (words that describe our Nouns) and we had a very funny but educational activity but with the use of Toilet Paper - each square that was picked by a student was then used as an ADJECTIVE to help describe themselves.  The students then gathered up their amazing courage and came up to the front of the class to share themselves with others - this was an excellent activity as the students had fun and continued to learn the importance of descriptions AND in believing in themselves by coming up to the front and sharing their ideas.  AMAZING WORK AND EFFORT, GRADE 2 STUDENTS!  With this said, we also read some fun Scholastic Books with scary stories - I read with expression, pausing at punctuation, and acting a bit in order for the students to see and understand the power great story telling can have on their readers.  Remember, these stories were all FICTION - not real =;)

Keep up the great work and please share the pictures below with your family.  You are doing amazing work and I hope you are very PROUD of your efforts!  Thank you, Grade 2 students and families for your continued support in our learning - YOU ROCK!  =;)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, GRADE 2 STUDENTS!

Week of Oct. 18 - 22, 2021

Good afternoon AMAZING Grade 2 students and families,

Thank you for an excellent week in working so hard on your lessons AND in always PERSEVERING (trying your best just like, "The Little Engine Who Could").  While reading as a class and in our small Literacy Center groups, we are now learning how stories, although enjoyable, but how they teach us a life lesson (the Theme of the story, the Moral of the story).  In "The Little Engine That Could", it is allowing us to see how some things in life are challenging but that we can always keep trying and eventually we will succeed.  I have posted a video link to the story if you would like to explore it further!

O'Canada Sign Language - upcoming Remembrance Day Assembly

Dear students and families,

As the Grade 2 students will be putting on our upcoming Remembrance Day Assembly in November, our class has been asked to do O'Canada (WITH sign language and singing) and then Salute to the Flag.

Below is the link we will be using to practice and use in the assembly.  Please take the time to practice this at home as we will be filming this on the next 2 Monday's while students are dressed in their FORMAL UNIFORMS

Thank you so much for your help and in practicing this for our Assembly =;)
